The Very Busy Spider

Eric Carle! Genius! That's all I going to say...

Well, no it's not, but that's a good start, because these books of his are great for children! Very minimal and simple, but right to the point. The whole series that he has, this one, the caterpillar one, Brown bear what do you see, all of his stories, I love for 2 simple reasons.... His colors in his paintings, and the way he describes beings by what they say and do.

This particular story is just about a busy spider, of course. She has found a spot on a farm yard fence, to spin her web. And many of the farm animals around her, wants to talk and do things, but she is so busy, to even pay attention. Then she is finally done, but once she is, she's too tired to do anything, she falls asleep that night, after catching a huge fly.

As far as what type of genre this is, honestly, I can just say its fictional, only because of course, the animals are speaking. The way the author uses the animal sounds as a way to speak, teaches the kids what sounds each farm animals make. As well as what they look like and what type of animals you can find on a farm. But, with the extra words said, of course that's fake.

Now the pictures!!! Another favorite of mine, because the water colors and bright, vivid paint colors, are bold and artistic, but they are also mini cut-ups and collages, built into one picture, animal, or person. This is all of Eric Carle's work, which is why he is one of my favorite children illustrators.

As a future teacher, I could use some inspiration from Mr. Carle for some activities in class, for instance, a collage assignment, where we cut up magazine pictures and posters, and make a poster picture relating to whatever lesson we're on. Ohhhhh!!! And we can also do a web building assignment. Either on paper, different shapes, colors, and sizes, or using yarn or string! Cool!

Eric Carle did a great job with this story book, as he always does with children's literature. But this book, what takes it home for me, the texture! This book, the bugs (spiders and flies) had a 3D feel in the book, that my daughter loved most about the story. Besides all the other great things, that was a plus, so I would give this book a 10 if I could rate it!

       After reading this book...
1) What bug/insect do you like most, and why? What does it do? Does it eat flies?
2) Ever been to a farm? What is your favorite animal?
3) After listening to the sounds that animals make, which noise is the funniest?
